A weight-loss journey isn’t easy. It requires changing your habits and taking action to achieve your health goals. Imagine not having to do it alone and receiving support the entire way. Thankfully, health coaches exist! You may be wondering what a health coach’s role is and what to expect when working with one. Your relationship with your health coach is a partnership—here’s how you can get the most out of it.

What a health coach is

A health coach is your partner in your weight loss journey who helps you implement positive lifestyle changes to make long-term improvements to your health. The health coach’s role is to guide you in setting goals and habit changes and teaming with you to develop action plans to meet those goals. Essentially, the health coach’s role is to hold up the map while you decide where you’d like to go! If you’re not quite sure, they are there for you with other ideas ready to explore.

What to expect when working with a health coach

Health coaches at Found are accredited and trained specifically to help you set health goals that lead to sustainable weight loss. Health coaches can:

  • Talk with you about your progress
  • Discuss any barriers/successes you notice
  • Help you build self-efficacy, or one’s own confidence in their ability to take action
  • Support you in creating a growth mindset
  • Help you see things from a different perspective
  • Hold you accountable for your goals and values.

Additionally, coaches can provide you with recipes, workouts, meal plans, and other tools to help you reach your goals.

How a health coach is different than a doctor

Health coaches don’t prescribe or discuss the medication options. That’s what our team of clinicians is for! If you qualify for that path, within two to four days of sign up, you'll get a message from your Found provider through your patient portal with an email with instructions to set this up. With your doctor, you'll discuss and decide on medication options that are available to you, and physicians also help with overall medication management.

How to make the most of your coaching relationship

During your weight loss journey, having support is essential. Health coaches are there to assist you in achieving the goals and habit changes you set for yourself. You know your body best and you are the expert when it comes to your health. Remember, this is your journey and you are in the driver’s seat. If it doesn’t feel that way, partnering with a health coach can help get you there. Knowing how to best utilize this partnership to support you with your goals can help you succeed.

Here’s how to get the most out of your health coaching and create a relationship with your coach:

  • Actively drive the process and choose your own goals. It has been shown that when individuals actively drive the process and choose their own goals, success is greater and more sustainable. At Found, we realize it is important for our members to participate in their health decisions so they feel empowered and experience better health outcomes.
  • Consistently communicate with your coach. The more you participate in communicating with your coach, the more personalized your program will be. The more we hear from you, the better! Don’t hesitate to reach out to your coach with any questions or if something isn’t working for you. Coaches will gladly share any resources, answer your questions, and make adjustments to find what works best for you.
  • Share honestly. Being honest and sharing accurate information helps your health coach understand your needs. That said, only share what you feel comfortable with! Our coaches love to learn more about you, your goals, and your lifestyle so they can help you. Feel free to share anything that you feel will help them help you.
  • Be willing to try new things. Taking the actions necessary to achieve your goals may be a challenge, but the willingness to give it a try is key. It may be uncomfortable to try something new, but it’s all about seeing what works best for you. You never know, you may discover something you enjoy!
  • Actively participate. It’s true that what you put into it is what you get out of it. With health coaching, the more you actively engage in challenges and commit to them, the more you may experience results.
