What is Wegovy?

Wegovy® is a brand-name injectable semaglutide drug manufactured by Novo Nordisk. Wegovy mimics the body’s natural gut hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is crucial in regulating blood sugar and appetite and can help slow digestion and keep you feeling fuller longer.

It’s approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for weight loss in adults with obesity (a body mass index—BMI—of 30 or greater) or adults with excess weight (a BMI of 27 or greater) who have at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol).

Wegovy is also approved for treating obesity in adolescents (ages 12 to 17) who have a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex based on CDC growth charts.

Check your body mass index using our free BMI calculator.

How does Wegovy work?

Eating triggers the release of GLP-1 in the gut, which stimulates insulin secretion to help lower blood glucose or blood sugar.

In some, though, the gut either doesn’t make enough of the natural GLP-1 hormone or the GLP-1 receptor cells in the brain aren’t sensitive to it. In people with impaired GLP-1 functioning, Wegovy mimics GLP-1 and stimulates the body’s receptor cells. With Wegovy helping signal fullness to the brain, “food noise” and persistent feelings of hunger can decrease. As a result, people are able to lose weight. For a more details, check out our detailed guide on how Wegovy works for weight loss.

How much does Wegovy cost with Found?

How much you’ll pay for Wegovy depends on your insurance coverage. Found membership starts at $17 per month with health insurance, which does not include the cost of Wegovy.

The current list price of Wegovy is $1,349.02 for a 28-day supply, and retail prices range from $1,321 to $1,650 for a 28-day supply. Wegovy’s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, has its own online pharmacy, NovoCare®, which reduces the out-of-pocket price of Wegovy to $499 for a 28-day supply.

Does insurance cover Wegovy?

Insurance coverage for Wegovy will depend on a few factors, including the details and limitations of your plan and your diagnosis. Some insurance providers do not cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss but will cover them for other diagnoses.

If you have health insurance through your employer, you can ask to speak with a benefits advisor to better understand your coverage. If your employer’s health care plan excludes weight care treatments, you can use this template as a guideline to write a letter to your human resources team to encourage future coverage of weight management and obesity care.

States individually determine which prescription drugs to include in their Medicaid coverage. To learn if prescription weight loss drugs are covered by Medicaid in your state, check online for your state’s Medicaid formulary or preferred drug list. . Unfortunately, Medicare typically does not cover drugs prescribed solely for weight loss.

Safety info: Wegovy has a black-box warning and may have serious side effects, including possible thyroid tumors. Do not use Wegovy if you or your family have a history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia 2 (MEN 2).

How

Wegovy

works

Use energy better

Wegovy regulates insulin, the hormone that helps your body use energy (glucose) from the food you eat.

Prevent fat gain

When your insulin is balanced, your blood sugar is steady, and your body is less likely to store energy as fat.

Shut out the food noise

Wegovy mimics hormones that slow digestion, so you feel full longer. It also signals the brain that you're satisfied—helping you keep your appetite in check.

Easy to take

Pre-filled pens make it simple to use the right dose every time

See results

Some people feel and notice changes within a month after starting Wegovy.

Questions we hear every day

Can I get a prescription for Wegovy online?

Prescriptions for Wegovy are now available as part of the offerings at Found, one of the largest medically-supported telehealth weight care platforms in the country.

The Found care team—which includes board-certified clinicians trained in obesity medicine and health coaches— determines eligibility for prescription weight loss medications based on a thorough evaluation of your medical history, eating behavior, lab work, and insurance coverage. At Found, all prescriptions for weight loss treatment are at a health care professional’s discretion when it is deemed clinically appropriate.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Wegovy and Ozempic® are brand names for two injectable prescription medications that Novo Nordisk manufactures with the same active ingredient, semaglutide. However, they are FDA-approved for different diagnoses and come in differing dosages. Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in patients with excess weight and obesity; Ozempic is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes and to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events in those with type 2 diabetes who have also been diagnosed with heart disease.

How much weight can you lose in 3 months with Wegovy?

Your weight loss journey is subject to several internal and external factors. While your results will be unique, a two-year clinical trial of 304 participants found a mean change of 15.2% body weight from baseline.

How much does a one-month supply of Wegovy cost?

As of April 2025, according to Novo Nordisk’s official site, Wegovy’s list price runs $1,349.02 per 28-day fill. If you have insurance that covers Wegovy for weight loss and qualify for the Wegovy savings offer, your co-pay may be as low as $0 per month.

Depending on your insurance coverage for Wegovy or if you don’t have insurance, Wegovy is also available for $499 per month for all doses (a box of four injector pens, a 28-day fill) for patients who pay with cash and order directly from Novo Nordisk’s NovoCare® Pharmacy. To be eligible, you must have a valid Wegovy prescription from a licensed provider, like those at Found, and live in the U.S. or its territories.

Will Blue Cross Blue Shield cover Wegovy?

A prescription for Wegovy may or may not be covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Coverage through insurance plans depends on a variety of factors, including health needs and your plan’s offerings. If you and your Found-affiliated health care provider determine Wegovy is right for you, Found will verify your benefits to confirm whether or not your insurance will cover your prescription.

Alternatively, Novocare has a website where you can get more information on coverage based on your insurance carrier.

Is there any way to get Wegovy cheaper?

Novo Nordisk’s NovoCare has a Wegovy savings offer, which is similar to a manufacturer coupon. Depending on your insurance coverage and eligibility, you may have the opportunity to pay $0 or $650 per month for your prescription. Be sure to review all terms and restrictions to fully understand the Wegovy savings offer

Should you avoid certain foods while taking Wegovy?

Wegovy’s manufacturer recommends pairing the medication with a well-balanced diet focused on whole foods. While no foods are off-limits when taking a semaglutide like Wegovy, limiting alcohol, high-sugar foods and drinks, and calorie-dense or fried foods may help curb gastrointestinal issues. Discuss side effects and dietary changes with your health care provider for best results.

What are the common side effects of Wegovy?

The most commonly reported side effects of semaglutide include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Upset stomach
  • Dizziness
  • Bloating
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Heartburn
  • Runny nose or sore throat.

Discuss your concerns with your medical provider if you experience side effects or are worried about how your body may react.

Does Wegovy have any drug interactions?

Some drugs can also interact with Wegovy, including:

  • Insulin
  • Sulfonylureas (these can cause blood sugar levels to drop dangerously low)
  • Some birth control pills
  • Other GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist medications such as liraglutide, dulaglutide, or tirzepatide

You should not drink alcohol while taking this drug because drinking can lower blood sugar. Combining alcohol with Wegovy may cause blood sugar levels to fall too fast, leading to fainting and dizziness.

Are there any serious risks with Wegovy?

Less common but more serious risks include:

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Kidney failure
  • Increased risk of hypoglycemia
  • Severe stomach problems
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Depression or thoughts of suicide
  • Changes in vision in people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
  • Increased heart rate

Wegovy comes with a black box warning about the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. (Semaglutide caused C-cell tumors in rodent studies.) Review the warning carefully with your health care provider before starting the medication.

Does Wegovy have a black box warning?

Although rare, Wegovy (semaglutide) caused thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. Wegovy has a “black box” warning of the risk of these tumors. If you have trouble swallowing, develop hoarseness, or feel swelling or a lump in your neck, contact your health care provider immediately.

The FDA also warns not to take Wegovy if you have a personal or family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 or medullary thyroid cancer.

Does Wegovy have other benefits besides weight loss?

Wegovy is also FDA-approved to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Weight loss helps reduce the fat tissue in the airway. In addition, research shows Wegovy improves airway function and reduces the severity of OSA.

Losing weight can positively impact long-term health conditions, energy levels, sleep health, longevity, joint pain, and more.

In addition to Wegovy’s impact on weight loss, Wegovy has also been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (including heart attack and stroke) in adults with known heart disease and either obesity or excess weight.

Who shouldn’t take Wegovy?

Certain medical conditions may influence a person’s ability to safely take Wegovy. According to the black box warning on Wegovy’s drug label, those with a personal or family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 or medullary thyroid cancer should not take Wegovy.

Those who plan to become pregnant should stop taking Wegovy two months prior to trying to conceive. Talk to your health care provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

If you are scheduled to have surgery utilizing anesthesia or deep sedation ask your medical provider when you should discontinue the use of Wegovy.

Additionally, people who have known allergies to the drug; have experienced depression, suicidal thoughts, or mental health issues; have a history of diabetic retinopathy; or have had problems with their pancreas or kidneys should consult with their doctor before starting Wegovy.

Older patients should use caution before starting Wegovy as they may experience more severe side effects and be at increased risk for nutritional deficiencies, loss of bone density, and muscle loss.
