Found Pillar Spotlight: GLP-1s

Take the quiz

“Prescription medication doubles to triples the odds of losing 5-10% body weight (or more)” - Obesity Medicine Association

When diet and exercise alone don’t lead to effective weight loss, medication may be able to work with your body to help you lose weight. As part of Found’s personalized weight care program, the medical team works with qualifying members to prescribe medication to help reach their weight loss goal. One of the prescription drugs the Found medical team may prescribe is a GLP-1, a medication that can be used to lower blood sugar levels to treat diabetes type 2.  Although not all GLP-1s have been approved by the FDA for weight loss, research from the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that although primarily indicated for diabetes, this type of medication also may contribute to clinically significant weight loss.¹

How do GLP-1s support weight loss?

GLP-1 agonists are used to lower blood sugar levels to treat diabetes type 2. These medications copy the way a hormone called “glucagon-like peptide 1” works in the body. When blood sugar levels start to rise after someone eats, GLP-1s stimulate the body to secrete more insulin which helps lower blood sugar levels. Research also shows that  GLP-1s appear to help suppress appetite. These drugs slow the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine. As a result, you may feel full faster and longer, so you eat less. Other potential health benefits of some GLP-1s are lowered risk of heart disease, including heart failure; stroke; and kidney disease.

While GLP-1s can be effective, they may not work or be medically appropriate for everyone.

  • All GLP-1s except one have to be taken by injection. The Found medical team can prescribe the only GLP-1 that is taken orally.

  • There are many brand names of GLP-1s and some can be very expensive, which is a turn off for many people.

Potential side effects of GLP-1s include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Like other prescription medications, patients should use GLP-1s under the guidance of a medical professional as part of a comprehensive program. This is why prescription medication is just one piece of Found’s plan, in conjunction with the other Found pillars: nutrition, movement, sleep, emotional health and stress, and social support.

Think prescription medication might be right for you?

We’d love to help by utilizing our expert team to set up the best path for your personalized weight care journey.

The Found journey starts with a health quiz. Your results determine the specific path that is the best fit for you. The “Rx Path” is Found’s most common plan. If eligible, you’ll meet virtually with a board-certified medical professional specializing in weight care who will take the time to understand your specific situation and prescribe the right medications for you. They will determine what medication, if any, is appropriate for you, pulling from our wide availability of various types of medications that may focus on suppressing cravings, increasing feelings of fullness, or blocking fat absorption.

No one medicine is appropriate for everyone, which is why Found works with a medical team and pharmacy to provide members access to the widest set of prescription medications on the market.
